1. Potluck Gathering to welcome 2023/2024 Academic Year
Date: 12 October 2023 (Thursday)
Time: 6.30PM - 9PM
Venue: Piyadasa Gallery, Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya
Join us to welcome new students into our Art and Visual Culture Program and reconnect with other students after the long semester break on our upcoming Potluck gathering. Our potluck this coming semester will be held after the ROD7001 Methodology in Visual Arts class on the first week of the semester, so that new students will have the chance to get to know their seniors in our postgraduate programmes.
Please bring a small dish to share. For those not familiar with the concept of a potluck, it is recommended that you bring a small dish serving 2-3 people to share.
To help us coordinate food for that day, so that we can have a diversity of food to share with one another, do register what you will be bringing at this link here.
Putting your name in the list is also to help us keep track of attendance. You can choose to bring food, drinks or desserts. Kindly note that you should bring halal food. Please do not serve pork or alcohol. We also welcome more vegetarian-friendly options!
We hope that you can join us for the potluck because we would also like to discuss with you on the formation of an Art and Visual Culture Program’s Postgraduate Student Club. This is an opportunity for you to get to know other course mates and work together with us in the future to create a more meaningful learning and research environment!
2. Updates on Face to face Proposal Defence and Candidature Defence
Starting from the next semester, the Art and Visual Culture Program has made the decision to conduct all postgraduate candidature seminars in person. This means that the proposal defence and candidature defence presentations will no longer be conducted online but will be held in person on campus.
The decision to transition back to in-person candidature seminars was made after careful consideration of the benefits it provides. In-person presentations offer a more comprehensive and engaging experience for both the presenting student and the evaluating committee. It allows for better interaction, immediate feedback, and a stronger sense of connection among all participants.
We acknowledge that some of you may have grown accustomed to the convenience of online presentations, especially considering the various challenges posed by the pandemic. However, we believe that the return to in-person seminars will enhance the quality and overall effectiveness of the evaluation process.
We hope that you will start planning accordingly and make the necessary arrangements for the upcoming semester in conversation with your supervisors. We encourage you to practice and refine your presentation skills, seek guidance from your supervisors, and prepare thoroughly for your candidature seminars.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your supervisors. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to your outstanding research presentations in person next semester.
3. Introducing our Youtube channel
We also like to take this opportunity to introduce to you our Youtube Channel. Our research fellow has been hard at work in setting up a media studio so that you’re able to explore other ways of communicating your research to the public. In the mean time, do check out some of the talks that we’ve recorded from last semester. Please continue to watch this space as we are gearing up to celebrate the Program’s 20th anniversary!
